Farming and Forestry

Mixed Land Use

The majority of land in the AONB is managed for agriculture. Agri-environment grant schemes, provided through the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), are of major importance in the area.

Of equal importance is the provision of advice and information to the managers of agricultural land. For example, in 2007/08 advisors from the Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group (FWAG) were commissioned to visit farms, raise awareness and promote Entry Level Stewardship and AONB grant schemes. Previously FWAG promoted the production of farm Biodiversity Action Plans (BAPs) in the AONB which informed landowners about management regimes that can benefit wildlife.
