Landscape

Mature Oak Woodlands

An important step in managing the unique landscapes of the AONB is to understand what makes these areas special and to identify their vulnerability to change. Worcestershire County Council, Gloucestershire County Council and Herefordshire Council have all carried out work within their areas to distinguish one type of landscape from another by describing their component parts.

The result is a set of Landscape Character Assessments which, when pieced together, provide a picture of the different types of landscape to be found in the AONB. Most local authorities in the area are using Landscape Character Assessments to influence the planning process and to ensure that landscape change maintains or enhances distinctiveness and character. 10 different Landscape Character Types have been identified within the Malvern Hills AONB.
