Malverns Heritage Lottery Project

Heritage Lottery FundedThis important project aims to restore two aspects of Malvern’s heritage: the landscape of the hills and the features associated with Malvern’s famous spring water.

The work is largely funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund with a grant of around three quarters of a million pounds. The Malvern Hills AONB is co-ordinating the project with funders, voluntary organisations and the various landowners.

Cattle Grid

The recently refurbished North Malvern Clock Tower

The landscape element aims to encourage graziers to put their stock on the hills and commons and so keep the open landscape free from scrub encroachment. To do this involves placing cattle grids at key points to stop the stock from wandering and looking toward obtaining grants to encourage commoners to graze. Concensus was gained through the Castlemorton Commons Plan (and Appendix) and led to the creation of the 4C's (Castlemorton Commons Co-ordinating Committee).

The water features element consists of restoring at least fourteen of the springs and spouts around Malvern. These range from a vast 5-storey Clock Tower with a well at the bottom to modest drinking troughs such as Barnards Green Trough.

There are other complementary projects, such as:

  • Walking guides for the water features of Malvern
  • Educational Resources about the water features on the Malvern Spa Association website
  • Portable displays about the project and the history of the water features
